How to Book Amazing Trips For Less Than You Budgeted!

I’m often asked by people “how do you afford all of these vacations?” or “where do you find such good travel deals?”.

The truth of it is that I’m basically just cheap and refuse to spend more money than absolutely necessary.

Here are a few of my favourite websites or tips for booking cheap vacations, without sacrificing on the awesome factor of your trip!

1. Subscribe to YYZ Deals:

This is on of my absolute favourite websites as far as cheap flights are concerned. You can sign up for the mailing list and you’ll be the first to know when a new deal has been posted. The catch is that the prices are usually dependent on specific departure and or arrival dates…but if it happens to work with your schedule, you’ve hit the discount jackpot!

2. Check out Groupon Regularly:

Part of me hates putting this on the list, but Groupon really deserves some recognition as far as my adventures are concerned. I’ve booked a handful of deals through them, and haven’t been disappointed in their customer service or the quality of the deals! I’ve done things like eagle viewing tours, spa days, and even booked a night at the Hotel de Glace (see my blog on that, here).

3. Change Your Departure Location:

What I suggest you do is search for a flight from your ideal departure location so that you get an idea of the price you’d be looking at. From there, search flights from locations close to you. For example, I’m in Toronto and will search for flights out of Hamilton or Buffalo to compare costs. I’ve often gotten lucky and found a cheaper flight out of another location and bet you will, too!

4. Learn to Love Google Flights:

One of my favourite places to search for flights is Google Flights. I love the calendar part of the ap that shows you the cost of the flight you’ve searched over the course of two months at a time (and you can search up to a year ahead, or something like that)! I’ve actually got an entire blog post about Google Flights Tips!

5. Wag Jag:

This is a another website that is similar to Groupon. I find that they always have different deals available, though, so it’s worth checking both places. The nice thing about WagJag too is that they seem to offer trips to more exotic locations with flights from Toronto (so you don’t need to struggle with figuring out how to get yourself to LA or Miami for your flight).

6. Sky Scanner:

This is a relatively new site to me, but so far I’m really loving it! Make sure that when you’re searching you put in everywhere as your destination, that way you can find the cheapest destinations from your location. You also want to search cheapest month or whole month so that you can narrow down the best time to book your trip. Obviously you have to be pretty flexible with your dates to take advantage of searching by this method, but I promise you’ll be able to save a lot of money using this search method!

7. Book Connecting Flights:

Although nobody likes to hear “connecting flight”, you should learn to be the rare person who doesn’t cringe at the idea! Reason being, you will typically save a lot of money by booking your flights with more connections. It also helps to book flights separately…for example, if you’re connection is through LA, try searching for a flight from your location to LA, and then another flight from LA to your final destination. Often you’ll save a few hundred dollars by booking flights this way!

8. Stay Through Air BnB:

For so many reasons, Air BnB is my favourite way to book somewhere to stay while I’m travelling. You’ll likely find that rooms through Air BnB are a fraction of the cost of staying in a hotel. The best part, if you use this link you’ll save $40!

Use my AirBnB discount link to save $40 off your first stay!

What are some ways that you save money while booking vacations? I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments!
