I had a fee weekend earlier this year and decided that I wanted to explore NYC on a budget. I basically wanted to spend as close to $0 as possible and had no idea how I was going to do it!
In order to spend a weekend in NYC on a budget I turned my search towards camping and alternative housing options, since a hotel was going to be the biggest expense. That’s when I discovered camping at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn! I couldn’t believe that for only $30 I could camp, safely and legally, with access to the NYC subway system! Floyd Bennett Field was pretty easy to find, but I have to admit that navigating once I got inside the park was a little more difficult. It’ an old airfield, with some of the airways still in use (which I discovered late at night when I woke up to what I thought was an earthquake). It’s definitely a unique place to camp and helped me save money on my weekend in NYC on a budget.
After spending the night in Brooklyn, I took the subway into NYC and spent the day exploring the sites. I took the subway as much as I could, which hardly cost me anything, and I was able to see all of the main sites I had in mind: Times Square, Freedom Tower & World Trade Centre Memorial, Brooklyn Bridge, 5th Avenue, Central Park, Brookfield Place for an art exhibit, Rockefeller Center, and the Statue of Liberty among a couple of others.
I have to admit, one thing I didn’t budget enough for was food! I couldn’t resist the delicious food options available in the city…check out this post about the famous Katz’s Deli and you’ll see what I mean! There is a delicious meal or treat option literally around every corner, so be prepared to resist the temptation or bring a little extra pocket cash.
Speaking of the Statue of Liberty, I don’t know why anybody would pay to take one of those boat tours around the island!?
I feel like I’m going to tell you the best tip ever about exploring NYC…the Staten Island Ferry is free and it gives you a great view of the Statue of Liberty from the water, as well as the NYC skyline and Brooklyn Bridge!
What kind of tips do you have for spending a weekend in NYC on a budget? I love exploring this city and am sure I’ll be going back sometime sooner rather than later!
