Until recently, I’ve never had an interest in New York. I had been to New York City when I was younger and spent too much money and inhaled too much pollution to have any real desire to return. I always figured that New York City was the only place “worth visiting” in the state…but holy shit, was I wrong!
I’m not even sure what made me start exploring what was in and around the Finger Lakes, but once I did…I couldn’t stop.
7 Places Not To Miss on a Finger Lakes Road Trip!
This was a really nice stop that felt a little off the beaten path. It’s super easy to get to the base of the falls and it doesn’t seem like many people venture here, so it’s a nice and peaceful spot to spend some time.
Chimney Bluffs State Park
For anyone from the Toronto area, this place is kind of the like the Scarborough Bluffs except one thousand times better! I wasn’t sure what to expect, and almost bailed on this stop all together…am I ever glad I didn’t! The view from the top trail is amazing, and the best part is that you can totally climb down the bluffs to the lake (I’m sure you’re not supposed to, but it seemed safe… enough).
Watkins Glen Sate Park
I still can’t get over the beauty of this park. I’d definitely recommend going as early in the morning as you can, because it definitely isn’t a hidden gem. It’s been ranked on the the best parks in the country, and you really don’t need to ask why. When the morning sun breaks through and lights up the gorge, the beauty of this park truly is unmatchable.
Robert Treman State Park
This magnificent park is close in proximity to Watkins Glen State Park. The nice part about this one though is that it’s not quite as well known, which means it’s a little less touristy than WG State Park.
This waterfall is one of my favourites out of the ones I’ve explored, so far! It’s so impressive and you can get right up close and personal too (just ignore the dirty looks from other tourists).
This best part, I think, about adding Ithaca Falls to your itinerary is that you get to stop in Ithaca! There are adorable local eateries and shops and the town is definitely worth exploring. The falls is nice too and locals seem to enjoy fishing and picnicking in the area.
Letchworth State Park
I have no idea how amazing this park would be. I’m absolutely obsessed with the views at every single spot I’ve seen, and the park is massive. I don’t think I’ll ever see it all, but I can’t wait to go back and try!
